The Discipleship Committee’s goal is to support the spiritual growth of all GSLC members. Many of the official duties of the committee involve educating the youth of the church from ages 3 through high school. Members also serve by learning alongside youth on Sundays, working on holiday programs, and helping out with vacation bible school. The committee’s programs include: Sabbath Sundays, Confirmation, High School, and Vacation Bible School.
In addition, the committee is involved with organizing field trips so that youth can experience God’s grace out in the world. This committee plans trips to Carlinville, Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center, and Leadership Lab at Augustana College. These camps, retreats, and leadership schools are places where space is created to experience the living God.
Jesus’ disciples gathered for the breaking of bread and fellowship and we seek to do the same through our monthly gatherings in one another’s homes for food and mutual encouragement. We also participate in feeding and clothing the homeless and hungry in our community on a regular basis which allows us to share God’s grace with our neighbors.
Through the hospitality of others Jesus and his disciples were blessed and welcomed into other people’s homes. We plan a variety of fundraisers that allow the youth in our congregation to raise money for future trips and experience receiving God’s grace from the body of believers.
If you are interested in helping with any of our education programs, please contact the Discipleship Chairs.
The goal of the Outreach Committee is to create opportunities to meet and welcome people to follow Jesus alongside us at Good Shepherd. One simple way we do this is by getting our name out in the community through advertisements, word of mouth from our members, and various social media applications.
The committee is never afraid to get their hands dirty in our own community and throughout the world. Below is a list of some of the many projects the committee is involved in:
- Fair Trade Fair (selling fair trade crafts for Lutheran World Relief)
- Christmas Giving Tree (providing gifts for foster children who would not receive them otherwise & for the men’s safe house)
- Backpack Drive (provided to empty tomb for children in need)
- Special Offerings (for Lent, Thanksgiving, and more and given to area and international charities)
- Weekly home food deliveries using references from empty tomb and food from our pantry.
If you would like to help out with any of the events or serve on the Outreach Committee, please contact the Outreach Chairs.
The fellowship committee plans events for the fellowship of congregation members. We provide a snack at the end of each Sunday morning church service, and host the annual church picnic and ice cream social events. We also prepare special receptions for the congregation. The church picnic is a fun way for the congregation to come together and celebrate the beginning of summer.
If you would like to serve on the fellowship committee or help serve on Sunday mornings, please contact the Fellowship Chairs.
The resources committee handles all maintenance projects and large construction projects for the church. In the past they have worked on installing a new canopy, roof repairs, installing new carpet, spring and fall clean up days, and keeping up the grounds of the church.
The committee also works to develop and maintain the resources of our church. At Thanksgiving, we participate in a “Harvest of Thanks” by providing 100 meals to families who are hungry in our local community.
Ideas for property improvements are always welcome, as is your support/volunteer help in carrying out these projects throughout the year. If you have a talent for helping people realize their own gifts, would like to help out or serve on the resources committee, please contact the Resources Chair.
Worship & Music Committee
The worship committee helps to prepare the church for all worship services through planning sessions with the Pastor, Choir Director and Organist. Each Sunday we bring our gifts before God in worship through our service as ushers, lay readers, cantors, communion servers, and special music. The committee is always looking for people to volunteer their time to help out before and during worship services.
If you would like to help out on Sundays or be a member of the worship & music committee, contact the Worship & Music Chair.
